I put out a challenge to a community of over 31,000 e-commerce business owners. The ask was simple: turn the camera around. Show your face. Tell your story.
Five people did it.
That number stopped me cold — and it's exactly what this episode is about. The fear of being seen is real, it's widespread, and it's quietly killing a lot of businesses. In this episode, I get into why that fear exists, where it comes from, and what it actually takes to move through it.
Why Fear of Judgment Holds Us Back
Most entrepreneurs hide behind their logo. Behind their brand. Behind a carefully curated feed that never shows the person running the show. And I get it — I used to do the same thing. I used alcohol as a shield for years to mask my own insecurities. The fear of judgment in business and the fear of being truly seen in life are the same fear wearing different clothes.
The challenge I ran in the Printful Insiders Facebook group made that painfully clear. Out of 31,000 members, only five were willing to step in front of the camera. That's not a content problem. That's a fear problem.
How to Start Moving Through It
1. Take Messy Action
You don't need a studio, a script, or a perfect angle. You need to start. Film a short video. Post an unpolished thought. The world doesn't end — and more often than not, the response surprises you. Perfectionism is just fear with better branding.
2. Reframe Who's Actually Watching
Most people are not scrutinizing you. They're thinking about themselves. The judgment you're afraid of is mostly imagined — and when it is real, it's usually coming from someone who's too afraid to do what you're doing.
3. Become the Face of Your Brand
People buy from people. Authenticity builds trust faster than any ad campaign. The five people who took my challenge didn't have perfect lighting or a polished pitch — they just showed up. That's what made them memorable.
4. Let Go of the Need for Approval
The opinions of people who won't step into the arena don't count. Engage with your audience, learn from real feedback, and stop optimizing for the approval of people who aren't even your customers.
Key Takeaways
- Fear of judgment is the #1 thing keeping entrepreneurs invisible.
- Messy action beats perfect inaction every time.
- Authenticity is a competitive advantage — most people won't do it.
- The face of your brand is you. Own it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start overcoming the fear of being on camera?
Start small. A 60-second video, a voice memo, a candid photo. Focus on saying something true rather than something perfect. Consistency builds confidence faster than preparation does.
Does perfectionism actually hurt my business?
Yes. It creates a bottleneck between your ideas and your audience. Done and authentic almost always outperforms polished and delayed.
Why does authenticity matter in branding?
Because people connect with people, not logos. When your audience knows who you are and what you stand for, they trust you — and trust converts.
